As I watch my young children flit from toy to toy, never seeming to settle on a single activity for very long, I wonder what it is I can do to help them focus and enjoy what they have. It often seems as though they are simply overwhelmed with the choices in their lives. During a typical day, they watch a little TV, wander around the house picking on each other, and stop in once in a while for some toys. Most of what we buy them is ignored, so we have cut back drastically on the toys we bring home.Despite cutting back, it seems as though nothing can hold their interest and I worry that I am doing something wrong. Then came Simplicity Parenting, which talks about going back to basics, eliminating all of the clutter, noise and excess from our children’s lives and how doing so can help them become calmer, happier individuals. Well, sign me up!
Parenting is such a hard, albeit satisfying job. Every day we are faced with decisions and uncertainty, whether our kids are six months or six years. Simplicity Parenting teaches us to cut the fat, so to speak, and reduce the sensory overload many kids today face. We all want to provide our kids with the best and most of everything, but perhaps we are over indulging them by giving them myriad choices in toys and activities.
Simplicity Parenting shows us how to establish routines, take a break from our hectic “go-go-go” lives and help our kids become calm, focused and at peace.
