Have you heard of the latest bestselling bedtime story? It’s not Goodnight Moon or Mama Do You Love Me. It’s not even meant for children. But it’s got plenty of soothing, rhythmical storytelling to tame even the most insomnia-prone of us—with plenty of swearing, insults, and exasperation thrown in.
Go the F*** to Sleep, written by Adam Mansbach, is the perfect parental bedtime story. It combines traditional bedtime stories—including sleeping animals across the globe, as many bedtime stories do—with one parent’s tiredness in trying to get his kid to finally go to sleep. The child, as many children do, repeatedly needs to go to the bathroom, get a glass of water, and otherwise stall bedtime to the best of his ability, while the parent repeatedly, in turn, asks him to go the f*** to sleep.
Many people have expressed concern that this story is something to be ashamed of, and that none of us should think of our children this way. These are valid concerns, and I have to agree that I normally did not have this problem; bedtime was one of my favorite times when my child was a toddler, and she’s often slept well on her own. And when she stalled, we often giggled over it. But it really can present some trying moments in parenthood, particularly if you have multiples—and the book itself is a funny piece of satire, not meant to be read to children. I support it, myself, and think that it’s too much fun to be ignored.
That said, it’s not for everyone. If you do want to read the book, I highly recommend searching for the Samuel L. Jackson audio version, which is downright hilarious. The source where I listened to it has since taken it down, but you can always purchase the audio version as well.
